South Asia Floods Disaster 2011

An estimated 16 million people have now been affected by flooding caused by heavy and sustained monsoon rains falling across South Asia. The floods have caused massive displacement of populations across Pakistan, India and Bangladesh bringing widespread destruction to homes, livelihoods and agricultural cropland.

In Pakistan, 5 million people have been directly affected by floods which have struck areas across most of the country. During the last month sustained rainfall caused flooding in the southern district of Sindh, while areas of Eastern Baluchistan and Punjab Provinces have also been badly hit. Close to 1 million homes have been damaged or destroyed.

In India 1.4 million people are directly affected by the flooding from over 2,600 villages. In Bangladesh over 1.5 million people are now affected by the flooding.

There are many villages that are competently cut off from the outside world, while over 100,000 are said to be marooned. In response to the worsening situation, MGR has launched an emergency appeal to assist as many people as possible in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

The appeal is to raise funds to distribute food rations and clean drinking water to the displaced people in camps.

For most people affected by the monsoon rains their land is the only source of income and the crops were just ready to be harvested but the continuous rain and now the flood water has badly damaged them.

The scale and severity of flooding that South Asia is currently experiencing coupled with the underlying poverty and vulnerability of this region mean that more people are simply unable to cope with the effects of such a devastating disaster.
